Ciprodex Ophthalmic Solution is a sterile, preserved combination antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory suspension indicated for the treatment of ocular infections accompanied by inflammation. It combines ciprofloxacin, a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic, with dexamethasone, a potent corticosteroid, to address both infectious pathogens and associated inflammatory responses. This formulation is specifically designed for topical ophthalmic use, providing targeted therapy with optimized bioavailability at the site of infection. It is suitable for both pediatric and adult populations, under appropriate medical supervision.

Features

  • Sterile, isotonic ophthalmic suspension
  • Contains 0.3% ciprofloxacin (as hydrochloride) and 0.1% dexamethasone
  • Preserved with benzalkonium chloride 0.01%
  • Available in 5 mL and 10 mL dropper bottles
  • pH-adjusted to enhance ocular comfort and drug stability
  • White, homogeneous suspension requiring shaking before use

Benefits

  • Rapid bactericidal action against a wide spectrum of Gram-positive and Gram-negative ocular pathogens
  • Effective reduction of inflammation, pain, and discomfort associated with bacterial eye infections
  • Convenient twice-daily dosing regimen supports patient adherence
  • Appropriate for use across age groups, including children over one year of age
  • Low incidence of systemic absorption when used as directed
  • Prevents potential vision-threatening complications from uncontrolled infection or inflammation

Common use

Ciprodex Ophthalmic Solution is commonly prescribed for bacterial conjunctivitis, blepharitis, and keratitis where inflammatory components are present. It is also used post-operatively in ocular surgery to prevent infection and manage inflammation. Its dual mechanism makes it particularly valuable in cases where pure antibiotic therapy may be insufficient due to significant swelling, redness, or pain.

Dosage and direction

Shake well before use. The usual dose is one to two drops instilled into the affected eye(s) every 12 hours for 7–10 days, or as directed by a healthcare provider. To administer, tilt the head back, pull down the lower eyelid to create a pouch, instill drops, and close the eye gently for 1–2 minutes. Avoid touching the dropper tip to any surface to prevent contamination. Do not discontinue therapy prematurely, even if symptoms improve.

Precautions

  • Not for injection or use in the ear unless specifically indicated
  • Contact lenses should not be worn during treatment
  • May cause temporary blurred vision; avoid driving or operating machinery until vision clears
  • Use with caution in patients with corneal perforation or thinning
  • Prolonged use may increase the risk of secondary fungal or non-susceptible bacterial infection
  • Monitor intraocular pressure with extended use due to corticosteroid component

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin, other quinolones, dexamethasone, or any component of the formulation
  • Viral keratitis (e.g., herpes simplex, vaccinia, varicella)
  • Mycobacterial or fungal ocular infections
  • Ocular tuberculosis

Possible side effect

Common side effects include transient ocular burning, stinging, or discomfort upon instillation; blurred vision; foreign body sensation; and itching. Less frequently, corneal deposits, conjunctival hyperemia, eyelid edema, or taste disturbance may occur. Rare but serious side effects include corneal perforation, superinfection, or allergic reactions. Discontinue use and seek medical attention if severe irritation, rash, or vision changes develop.

Drug interaction

No specific pharmacokinetic drug interactions have been documented with topical ophthalmic use. However, patients using other ocular medications should administer them at least 5–10 minutes apart to avoid dilution or interaction. Systemic interactions are unlikely due to minimal absorption.

Missed dose

If a dose is missed, administer it as soon as possible. If it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume the regular schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.

Overdose

Topical overdose is unlikely to cause systemic effects due to limited absorption. If accidentally ingested, seek medical attention. Ocular overdose may result in increased irritation or redness; rinse the eye gently with sterile saline or water if excessive solution is applied.

Storage

Store at controlled room temperature (15–30Β°C). Keep the bottle tightly closed and protected from light. Do not freeze. Discard any unused solution 28 days after opening. Keep out of reach of children and pets.

Reviews

Clinical studies and post-market surveillance indicate high efficacy and patient satisfaction with Ciprodex Ophthalmic Solution, particularly regarding its rapid symptom relief and convenient dosing. Healthcare providers frequently note its reliability in managing moderate to severe bacterial eye infections with inflammatory components. Some users report mild transient stinging upon application, but overall tolerability is rated favorably.
