Augmentin is a widely prescribed combination antibiotic containing amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium, designed to combat a broad range of bacterial infections. Its unique formulation enhances efficacy against β-lactamase-producing bacteria, making it a first-line choice for respiratory, skin, and urinary tract infections. Clinicians value its reliable pharmacokinetic profile and well-established safety record in both adult and pediatric populations. Proper usage under medical supervision ensures optimal therapeutic outcomes while minimizing resistance development.
Features
- Combination of amoxicillin (a penicillin-class antibiotic) and clavulanate potassium (a β-lactamase inhibitor)
- Available in multiple formulations: oral tablets (including chewable), suspension, and intravenous injection
- Dosage strengths tailored to infection severity and patient age/weight (e.g., 250/125 mg, 500/125 mg, 875/125 mg)
- Rapid absorption with peak plasma concentrations occurring within 1-2 hours post-administration
- Broad-spectrum activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative aerobes and anaerobes
Benefits
- Effectively eradicates β-lactamase-producing bacteria that are resistant to amoxicillin alone
- Provides comprehensive coverage for mixed bacterial infections, reducing the need for multiple antibiotics
- Offers flexible dosing options suitable for all age groups, including pediatric patients
- Demonstrates high clinical cure rates in infections of the respiratory tract, skin/soft tissue, and genitourinary system
- Helps prevent complications and recurrence of bacterial infections when used as directed
Common use
Augmentin is indicated for the treatment of a wide variety of bacterial infections including acute bacterial sinusitis, community-acquired pneumonia, acute otitis media, skin and skin structure infections, and urinary tract infections. It is particularly effective against organisms producing β-lactamase enzymes such as Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus influenzae, and Moraxella catarrhalis. The medication may also be used prophylactically in certain surgical procedures and for animal bite wounds where mixed flora are anticipated.
Dosage and direction
Dosage varies based on infection severity, pathogen susceptibility, and patient factors. For mild to moderate infections: Adults typically receive 500 mg every 12 hours or 250 mg every 8 hours. For severe infections: 875 mg every 12 hours or 500 mg every 8 hours. Pediatric dosing is based on amoxicillin component (25-45 mg/kg/day divided every 12 hours or 20-40 mg/kg/day divided every 8 hours). Take at the start of a meal to enhance absorption and reduce gastrointestinal upset. Complete the full prescribed course even if symptoms improve earlier.
Precautions
Use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment; monitor liver function periodically during prolonged therapy. May cause antibiotic-associated colitis; discontinue if diarrhea develops. Use cautiously in patients with mononucleosis due to increased risk of skin rash. Renal function should be assessed, with dosage adjustments necessary for creatinine clearance below 30 mL/min. May cause false positive urinary glucose tests when using copper reduction methods.
Contraindications
History of serious hypersensitivity reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis) to any penicillin or β-lactam antibiotic. Previous history of Augmentin-associated cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction. Patients with known phenylketonuria should avoid chewable tablets containing aspartame. Contraindicated in patients with a history of amoxicillin/clavulanate-associated hepatic dysfunction.
Possible side effect
Common side effects include diarrhea (9%), nausea (3%), skin rashes (3%), and vomiting (1%). Less frequently observed: vaginitis, abdominal discomfort, headache. Serious side effects requiring immediate medical attention include: severe skin reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), hepatotoxicity (dark urine, jaundice), antibiotic-associated colitis, and anaphylaxis. Transient elevations in liver enzymes may occur in up to 15% of patients but typically resolve after discontinuation.
Drug interaction
Probenecid decreases renal tubular secretion of amoxicillin, increasing and prolonging blood levels. Concurrent use with allopurinol may increase incidence of skin rashes. May reduce efficacy of oral contraceptives; recommend additional contraceptive methods. Warfarin monitoring is recommended as Augmentin may potentiate anticoagulant effects. Concurrent use with mycophenolate mofetil may reduce its active metabolite concentrations.
Missed dose
Take the missed dose as soon as remembered. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume regular schedule. Do not double doses to make up for a missed dose. Maintaining consistent blood levels is important for efficacy, but occasional missed doses are unlikely to significantly impact treatment outcomes if the overall regimen is maintained.
Overdose
Symptoms may include gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) and electrolyte imbalances. In severe cases, renal impairment may occur. Management is supportive with maintenance of hydration and electrolyte balance. Hemodialysis can effectively remove both amoxicillin and clavulanate from circulation. Contact poison control center or emergency department immediately for guidance.
Storage
Store tablets at 20-25°C (68-77°F) in original container. Keep suspension refrigerated (2-8°C/36-46°F) when not in use; discard unused portion after 10 days. Keep all formulations in tightly closed containers away from moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use beyond expiration date printed on packaging.

This information is for educational purposes only and does not constitute medical advice. Augmentin is a prescription medication that should only be used under the supervision of a qualified healthcare professional. Always follow your healthcare provider’s instructions regarding dosage and administration. Individual response to medication may vary based on multiple factors including age, renal function, and concomitant medications.
Reviews
Clinical studies demonstrate Augmentin achieves clinical cure rates of 85-95% in approved indications. Physicians consistently rate it as highly effective for respiratory infections, with particular praise for its coverage of β-lactamase-producing organisms. Patients report satisfactory outcomes when the full course is completed, though gastrointestinal side effects are noted as the most common reason for discontinuation. The pediatric suspension is generally well-accepted by children when properly flavored and administered with food.
